Named after Bathsheba Everdene’s farm in Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd, the Weatherbury is a chair of robust good looks and honest construction. It wears any fabric with the same quiet confidence — and looks best in a room that isn’t trying too hard.

The wings are moderate rather than dramatic, the arms are rolled and substantial, and the back rises to 104cm without the severity of the taller wingbacks. It is the most straightforward chair in this group, and the least expensive.

If you want a wingback for the way it sits rather than the way it looks, this is the one. Moderate wings still cut a draught and still give something to lean into, without the enclosing formality of the Sotherton or the Silverbridge.

It genuinely does take anything. Checks and stripes suit its farmhouse character, velvets take it towards the drawing room, and plain wools let the shape speak. This is the wingback to choose if the fabric decision is the one you want to be free on.
