Named after the Dorset seaside town in Hardy’s The Well-Beloved, the Knollsea is a chair with the lightness and ease of a late summer afternoon. Its relaxed, open frame and considered proportions make it a natural choice for a sitting room facing the garden.

It is the broadest wingback here at 88cm and among the deepest at 95cm — a large, comfortable chair with a tall refined back, softly shaped wings and dark tapered legs on castors. The tapered leg is what keeps it looking elegant rather than bulky at this size.

Between this and the Sotherton the choice is straightforward: the Sotherton is taller and more upright, the Knollsea is wider and more relaxed. One is for sitting formally; this one is for an afternoon with the newspaper.

The generous surfaces suit large-scale fabrics, and the softer wing shape is more forgiving of pattern than a sharply scrolled wing would be. Linens, large florals and textured plains all sit well on it.
