The Budmouth takes its name from Hardy’s fictionalised Weymouth in The Trumpet-Major, a cheerful Georgian seaside town. Elegantly curved and easy in its proportions, it carries that same holiday lightness wherever it is placed.

This is the traditional wingback of the group: high back, curled scroll arms, wings that turn inwards to enclose the head, and turned oak front legs on castors. Everything about the shape descends directly from the eighteenth-century original.

At 73cm it is the narrowest wingback here by some margin — 15cm slimmer than the Knollsea — which makes it the practical choice where the fireside spot is tight. The inward-turning wings do the job they were invented for: they hold warmth and cut draughts.

Traditional shape, traditional cloth. Checks, stripes, herringbones and wools all suit the scroll arms and wings; a documentary print or a classic floral is entirely at home. Very contemporary fabrics can look at odds with the frame.
