A few minutes with a tape measure now will save you time later. Here's everything you need to know to make sure your new chair fits perfectly in your room.
Our chairs are handmade to order, so it's important to check your measurements before you commit. Every room is different — alcoves, radiators, doorways, and the flow of the space all play a part. This guide will walk you through exactly what to measure and what to look out for.
A retractable tape measure at least 3 metres long. Ideally metric and imperial.
Jot down each measurement as you go. It's easy to forget once you step away.
Take photos of the space from different angles. These help us advise you if needed.
Measure the width and depth of the area where you'd like the chair to sit. Leave at least 10cm clearance on each side so the chair doesn't feel cramped, and allow 60-80cm in front for legroom and to pass comfortably.
If the chair is going into an alcove or beside other furniture, measure the exact gap between the fixed points.
Particularly important for wingback chairs, which can be up to 115cm tall. Measure the height from floor to the bottom of any window sills, shelving, or wall art that might be behind or beside the chair.
If the chair sits beneath a window, check that the top of the chair back won't block the window frame or interfere with curtains.
Your chair needs to get into the room. Measure the width and height of every doorway, hallway, and stairway between your front door and the final room. Don't forget to account for any tight turns.
Most of our chairs can be delivered fully assembled, but some larger wingbacks may need to be tilted or angled through narrower openings.

Radiators — Check the position and depth of any radiators. Your chair should sit at least 10cm away to allow airflow and prevent fabric damage.
Plug sockets — Make sure your chair won't block any sockets you need. If there's a floor lamp nearby, check the cable can still reach.
Natural light — Consider where the light falls throughout the day. Some fabrics may fade in direct sunlight, so position accordingly.
Room flow — Walk the path around where the chair will sit. Make sure it doesn't block natural routes through the room or to other furniture.
