Named after the Rushworth estate in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, the Sotherton has the confident scale of a house with long corridors and high ceilings. A wingback with presence and poise, it demands the right corner and rewards the finding of it.
At 111cm it is the tallest chair in the collection. The wings are generous and set high, the back is straight rather than reclined, and the whole chair sits you upright and formally. It is a commanding shape and it does not pretend otherwise.
Ceiling height is the real consideration, not floor space — at 79cm wide the footprint is moderate. In a room with proper height it looks magnificent; in a low-ceilinged room it will feel like too much chair. The Large adds 5cm of width for a more generous seat at the same height.
The tall back and broad wings give an enormous uninterrupted expanse of fabric. This is the chair for the fabric you have been talking yourself out of. A large botanical or a rich plain velvet both look extraordinary on it.
