The Uppercross takes its name from the village in Jane Austen’s Persuasion, where old habits and new feelings sit comfortably together. A generously proportioned armchair, it is the kind of piece a room is rearranged to accommodate.
At 99cm tall and 80cm wide it is one of the larger chairs here without being a wingback — high in the back, broad across the arms, and deep enough at 85cm to sit properly back into. The back rises well above head height for most people, so it gives support a lower chair cannot.
This is a chair for a room with some ceiling height. In a low room the height will read as looming; in a well-proportioned sitting room it anchors a corner and gives the eye somewhere to rest.
The tall back is a large uninterrupted area of fabric, which makes it one of the better chairs for a considered choice — a botanical, a documentary print, a strong plain velvet. Whatever goes on it will be seen.
