The Sandbourne takes its name from Hardy’s elegant, fictional Bournemouth in Tess of the d’Urbervilles — a resort of pleasures and unhappy endings. This occasional chair has all the elegance without the melancholy, and suits a light, airy room entirely.

It is the shortest chair in the collection at 80cm, and the most forgiving of a small room. The back is low and gently curved, the arms are compact and set close to the frame, and the whole thing sits on short turned legs that keep the outline neat. A chair of this shape occupies a corner without dominating it.

It suits a bedroom, a landing, a bay window, or the awkward space beside a fireplace that nothing else quite fits. At this scale, plains and small-scale checks flatter the curve — anything from the Plains & Prints or Checks & Stripes groups reads particularly well. Large-scale florals tend to fight it.

Available in two sizes. The Large adds 4cm of height and 4cm of width, which is worth considering if you are over six foot or want a chair you can settle into rather than perch on.
