A refined occasional chair with a gently rounded back and tapered legs, the Woodston brings quiet elegance to any room. Named after the rectory in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, it suits a reading corner as well as a drawing room.

The rounded back is the defining feature — it curves in plan as well as in profile, so the chair reads softly from every angle rather than presenting a flat face to the room. Tapered legs lift it clear of the floor and keep the whole thing looking lighter than its 79cm width suggests.

At 72cm it is one of the shallowest chairs in the range. That matters more than people expect: a shallow chair sits you upright and holds you there, which is why this one works so well for reading or conversation and less well for falling asleep in front of the television.

Curved backs and plain cloths are a reliable pairing — the shape supplies the interest. Small repeating patterns work too. Very large repeats get distorted around the curve and are best avoided.

Designed in York, handcrafted in Nottingham. Made to order in 10–12 weeks, with free fabric samples posted before you order.
