The Donwell takes its name from Mr Knightley’s estate in Jane Austen’s Emma — an English house of sense, substance, and quiet beauty. This solid, well-proportioned armchair has exactly that character: dependable, handsome, and entirely without pretension.

It is a Howard-style chair: low rolled arms, a single deep seat cushion, and a back that sits only slightly proud of the arms. The line is horizontal rather than vertical, which is why it reads as generous at 84cm tall when taller chairs can read as formal. Turned legs on brass castors are the traditional finish for this shape and they are here.

A low-backed chair like this suits a room where you don’t want to interrupt the sightline — in front of a window, floating in the middle of a sitting room, or paired with a sofa of similar height. It is a chair for slouching in rather than sitting up in.

The large unbroken cushion and plain back panels give fabric room to breathe, so patterns read properly rather than being cut up by seams. Florals and larger prints work particularly well.
