The Barset takes its name from Trollope’s beloved fictional English county, home to cathedral close and country house alike. Dependable, well-proportioned, and quietly distinguished, it is a chair that earns its place in any room.

It is a tub chair: back and arms form one continuous curve that wraps round the sitter, with no break where the arm meets the back. Short dark legs sit beneath. The effect is enclosing without being heavy, and it is one of the few shapes here that looks equally correct from behind — worth knowing if the chair will float in a room rather than sit against a wall.

At 63cm deep it is among the shallowest chairs in the collection, which is what makes the two sizes genuinely useful rather than a formality. The Small is a properly compact chair for a bedroom or a narrow landing; the Large is a sitting-room chair.

The continuous curve suits plains and small patterns. Anything with a strong directional repeat will run round the sweep at an angle and rarely looks intentional.
