The Casterbridge takes its name from Hardy’s fictionalised Dorchester in The Mayor of Casterbridge, a market town of strong will and civic pride. A substantial, well-built armchair, it has the solidity and straightforwardness of a county town on market day.

It is the most heavily built chair in the occasional range and the dearest, and the construction is where the money goes rather than the ornament. Deep rolled arms, a substantial tight back, and turned legs on castors — a traditional English armchair with nothing surplus on it.

The 89 × 73 × 82cm frame is a proper everyday chair rather than an accent piece. It is built to be sat in daily for years, which is the honest argument for the price.

Its plain, generous panels are forgiving of almost any fabric, which makes it a sensible chair for a room where you want the upholstery to be quiet — a plain wool, a subtle texture, a herringbone. It takes a bold print perfectly well; it just doesn’t need one.
