The Rosings takes its name from Lady Catherine de Bourgh’s grand Kentish estate in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. An upright, commanding chair with a certain imperious quality, it looks best in a room that can hold its own.

Despite the description, the proportions are restrained: 84cm tall and 68cm wide, with neat arms and a tight back that give it a compact, tailored outline. There is no slouch in it. The seat sits you square, and the arms are set at a height for resting rather than sprawling.

Narrow and deep like the Knapwater, it fits between two pieces of furniture where a wider chair would not, and it holds its own at a card table or a writing desk. It is a good second chair for a room that already has a big soft one.

The tight upholstery and clean panels flatter tailored fabrics — herringbones, fine checks, tight weaves. A fabric with structure suits the chair’s character better than something soft and forgiving.
