Named for the charitable institution in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, the Lowood is a chair of quiet resilience and simple beauty. Its spare, upright form and honest construction reflect a timeless confidence in good materials and fine making.

In fact it is one of the broader chairs in the collection — 85cm across, with a deep-buttoned back in the Victorian manner, low rolled arms and turned legs on castors. The buttoning covers a large expanse of back, which is what gives it that heavily upholstered, drawing-room look.

Width is what to consider here. At 85 × 84cm it is close to square in plan and needs a proper wall or a proper corner; it is not a chair to squeeze in. Given the room, it is among the most comfortable here.

Extensive buttoning is best on velvet, where the light does the work, or on a substantial wool. Patterns get broken up by the buttons and rarely repay the fabric cost on this particular chair.
