Named after the charming schoolmaster in Dickens’ David Copperfield, the Steerforth is a chair of easy confidence and good looks. Its balanced proportions and generous seat make it a welcome addition to any living room.

It is the widest chair in the collection at 90cm, and exactly as tall as it is wide — a square outline that reads as deliberate rather than accidental. The arms are broad and squared off, the seat cushion is generous, and the back is plain and tight.

That squareness is the reason to choose it. It sits comfortably alongside a modern sofa in a way the traditional shapes here do not, and it is wide enough to curl up in sideways, which is a rarer quality than it sounds. It needs floor space and repays being given it.

Large flat panels are the best canvas in the range. Big prints, bold botanicals and large-scale checks all read properly here because nothing interrupts them. Plain velvets look expensive on this frame.
