Named after the great Dorset heath in Hardy’s The Return of the Native, the Egdon has the character of open landscape — vast, patient, and quietly magnificent. This bold chair rewards a fabric of equal ambition: a rich velvet, a dramatic print.

In form it is a compact club chair — rolled arms, a single seat cushion, a plain tight back — built to a smaller footprint than the shape usually comes in. At 76cm deep it is noticeably shallower than the Donwell or the Casterbridge, which makes it one of the few chairs of this character that will actually fit a modest sitting room.

Small castors on short turned legs let it move easily, and the low arms mean it tucks under a side table without catching.

The tight back and clean arm rolls make it one of the better chairs here for a strong fabric. A rich velvet gives it depth; a dramatic print has enough uninterrupted surface to be read properly. It carries plains well too, though it gains less from them than most.
