Named after Evelyn Waugh’s great Baroque house in Brideshead Revisited, the Brideshead brings an air of faded grandeur and enduring taste. Its sweeping back and considered proportions are a reminder that the best things are always made to last.

This is an armless chair — a slipper chair in the proper sense — with a tall back that sweeps up and slightly outwards. At 51cm across it is the narrowest chair in the collection, joint with the Alfredston, and the absence of arms makes it narrower still in practice. Short dark legs keep the base tidy.

Armless chairs earn their keep in places an armchair cannot go: at the end of a bed, in a hallway, either side of a console table, or as occasional seating in a dining room that fills up at Christmas. Two of them side by side take less room than one club chair.

With no arms, the back is the whole event. This is the chair to be bold on — a botanical, a large-scale print, a strong velvet. Fabric that would overwhelm a bigger chair often lands perfectly here.
