Named after the Yorkshire home of the Bertrams’ nursemaid in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, the Norland is a chair of steady, considered comfort. Its generous arms and upright back make it the ideal companion for a long afternoon with a good book.

It reaches a full 100cm in height on a 69cm width — tall and narrow, with softly curved arms that sweep outwards and a back that stays upright rather than reclining. Dark legs finish it. The curve of the arm is the detail that lifts it above a plain accent chair.

Tall and narrow is a genuinely useful combination and there are only two chairs here that offer it. Where the Framley is formal and scrolled, the Norland is softer and more inviting — the same footprint, a different room.

The curved arms are best served by fabric with some give: wools, boucles and softer weaves follow the shape cleanly. Stiff cloths can pull at the curve. The tall back panel will take a pattern happily.
