The Millcote draws its name from the fictional town in Jane Eyre, near Thornfield Hall, full of unnamed promise. With its clean silhouette and well-proportioned frame, it is equally at home in a contemporary apartment or a period interior.

The silhouette really is clean — squared arms, a plain tight back, no buttoning, no scrolls, no visible ornament — on neat dark legs. What the photographs understate is the size: 85cm wide and 95cm deep makes this one of the largest chairs in the collection, and much larger than its tidy outline implies.

Read the depth before choosing it. At 95cm this is a chair to sink into for an evening, and it needs the floor space to sit properly away from a wall. In the right room it is the most comfortable modern chair here.

Large clean panels and no interruptions make it the best canvas in the range alongside the Steerforth. Big prints, wide stripes, strong plains — all read exactly as the fabric designer intended.
