Named after the Berkshire village in Hardy’s Jude the Obscure where young Jude first looks towards his ambitions, the Cresscombe is a chair of fine bones and elegant proportions. It rewards the most carefully chosen fabric.

The back is channelled — vertical fluting running its full height — which is the most technically demanding upholstery detail in the collection and the reason the chair costs what it does. Turned oak legs on brass castors carry it in the Howard tradition.

At 103cm deep it is the deepest chair here, joint with the Wuthering, and 100cm tall with it. This is a substantial piece of furniture. The Ladies Howard option is not a token second size: 12cm lower in the back and slightly shallower, it is a properly different chair and the better choice for a smaller frame or a smaller room.

Channelling wants plain fabric. Velvet is the traditional answer and the shadows in the flutes do the rest. Patterns are broken up by the channels and almost never justify themselves here.
